Today’s Takeaway: Resting in Jesus
Today I came home from work completely exhausted.
I was so tired that I didn’t even want to talk. My brain felt like a bowl of mush, and honestly, there was still work left to do.
But when it was time to leave, I reminded myself:
The work will still be there tomorrow. But my body needs rest today.
So I went home.
I think I’m not very good at resting. I’m always a little tense, always thinking about what needs to be done next. And if I’m honest, I think that’s part of why I feel anxious so often.
Tonight, I cooked dinner after work. And I realized that when you spend all day using your brain, doing something physical can actually feel like a kind of rest.
While I was eating, I put on a sermon.
But instead of feeling peaceful, I somehow became more and more irritated. 😂
So after dinner, I don’t know why, but I suddenly really wanted to worship.
I just started humming.
I hummed whatever came to mind:
“The Lord is my strength,
He is my help,
my ever-present help in times of trouble…”
I couldn’t remember the rest of the song, so I switched to another one.
Then another.
“Rejoice always,
sing praises to the Lord…”
Then another:
“I will sing the most beautiful song
to the One who is worthy of all praise…”
Honestly, I just sang whatever I could remember. 😂
And somehow, little by little, the exhaustion disappeared.
My headache was gone, too.
I felt light again. Alive again.
And then, because I’m still very much me, I sat down and scrolled through TikTok for a while.
…and my headache came back. 😂
My body felt tired again, too.
It was such a simple reminder.
I really do need Jesus.
Not just when I have a big problem.
Not just when I need an answer.
But in the ordinary, exhausting, messy parts of everyday life.
Jesus said:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
Maybe rest isn’t always about getting everything done and finally having nothing left to worry about.
Maybe sometimes, rest is simply knowing that I don’t have to carry everything by myself.
I can come to my Father tired.
I can come to Him anxious.
I can come to Him without having the right words.
Even when all I can do is hum a worship song I barely remember.
And He is still there.
Rooted in Love. Growing in Grace.
